What to Expect When You’re Expecting a Main Electrical Panel Upgrade (MPU) on the Central Coast of California with Elect Electric

Step 1: Start with a Project Planning Consultation


The first step is our Project Planning Consultation.


Instead of automatically scheduling an electrician to come to your home just to look at the panel, we can usually gather much of the information we need remotely.


We’ll ask you for photos of your existing electrical panel, meter, surrounding area, and other relevant equipment. You can submit the information through our website or text the photos to our office.

If it would be helpful, we can also schedule a phone or Zoom call to talk through the project with you.

During this process, we’re looking at things such as:

  • Your existing electrical service size

  • The type and condition of your current panel

  • Whether your electrical service is overhead or underground

  • What you may want to add to your home in the future

  • Potential complications we can identify before the project begins

Step 2: Review Your Main Electrical Panel Upgrade Options

Step 3: Approve the Project and Schedule a Site Visit


Once you’ve reviewed the options and selected the work you would like completed, you’ll approve the project and make the required initial payment.


That’s when we move from planning into project preparation.


We will schedule an on-site visit to verify the information used to prepare the estimate, take measurements, confirm equipment locations, and identify any conditions that need to be addressed before installation.

This is also when we can verify conduit routing, service locations, grounding and bonding requirements, access, and other job-specific details.



When underground utilities need to be identified before digging or other work, we’ll also coordinate the appropriate USA North 811 utility marking process.


Once the project has been verified, several things begin happening at approximately the same time.



Step 4: Materials, Permits and PG&E Coordination


Think of this stage as three parallel paths that all have to come back together before installation day.

We order and prepare the electrical panel, breakers, service equipment, and other materials required for your project.


For many standard main panel upgrades, the equipment we need is readily available. If your project requires specialized equipment, we’ll account for that as part of the scheduling process.


Local Building Permit

We apply for the required electrical permit with the appropriate city or county building department.

Elect Electric also coordinates the required electrical inspection.


For many standard main panel upgrades, the local permitting process is relatively quick.

This is often the least predictable part of the schedule.


Depending on the project and what PG&E requires, their portion of the process may take anywhere from approximately five days to 30 days or longer.


Projects involving underground service, engineering changes, utility equipment upgrades, or other special circumstances can take considerably longer.

Once the materials, local permit, and PG&E requirements are all ready, we can bring everything together and schedule the work.



Step 5: Scheduling Your Main Panel Upgrade


A main electrical panel upgrade is a little different from a normal electrical service call because several different people and organizations may need to be coordinated on the same day.

For a typical main panel replacement, we need:

  • The homeowner and property ready for the scheduled outage

  • Elect Electric’s electricians and materials on site

  • PG&E available for the electrical service disconnect and reconnect

  • The local building department available for the required inspection


Our job is to coordinate those pieces so the old electrical service can be disconnected, the new equipment installed and inspected, and your home re-energized as smoothly as possible.


Once everything is confirmed, we’ll schedule the installation with you.



Step 6: What Happens on Main Panel Upgrade Day?


For many standard main panel upgrades, your electrical power will be shut off in the morning.

PG&E disconnects the utility power so our electricians can safely remove the existing equipment and begin installing the new electrical service equipment.


Depending on the project, this may include:

  • Removing the existing main electrical panel

  • Installing the new panel and meter equipment

  • Replacing or updating circuit breakers

  • Updating grounding and bonding

  • Updating the overhead service mast when required

  • Reconnecting existing circuits

  • Completing required labeling

  • Correcting related code requirements associated with the panel replacement


The installation must reach the appropriate stage for the local building inspector to inspect the work.

Once the required inspection has passed, PG&E can reconnect the electrical service.



How Long Will My Power Be Off?


This is probably the most common question we hear about main panel upgrades.

For most of our main panel upgrade projects, homeowners should plan to be without electrical power for the working day.

Power may be disconnected around 8:00 a.m., and in the majority of our projects it is restored by approximately 5:00 p.m.


However, we recommend preparing for the possibility of a longer outage.

Utility emergencies, inspection delays, unexpected job conditions, or PG&E scheduling issues can occasionally push the reconnection later into the evening, sometimes as late as 9:00 or 10:00 p.m.


That’s not typical, but we’d rather have you prepared for the possibility than surprised by it.


If you work from home, have medical equipment, refrigeration concerns (refrigerators are typically fine for a day without power), or another need that depends on continuous electrical power, please discuss it with us before installation day so you can make appropriate arrangements.



What If I Have Underground Electrical Service?


Underground electrical services can require additional planning.


If your existing underground utility conductors and related equipment can remain in place, the process may be fairly similar to an overhead panel replacement.

However, if PG&E requires changes to the underground service, the project can become significantly more involved.


That may include:

  • PG&E engineering

  • New conduit or service requirements

  • Trenching

  • Underground utility locating

  • New service conductors

  • Additional inspections

  • Additional utility fees

  • A longer project timeline


Underground service upgrades can also involve a longer PG&E application and engineering process than a standard panel replacement.

Step 7: Inspection, Reconnection and Final Details

After approval, PG&E can reconnect the electrical service.

Can an Older Electrical Panel Affect Homeowners Insurance?

California’s insurance market has changed significantly, and some insurance carriers are becoming increasingly selective about the homes and electrical equipment they are willing to insure.

Having one of these panels does not automatically mean your insurance company will cancel your policy. Requirements vary by insurance carrier, policy, and the condition of the equipment.

  • The area where underground service enters the property, if applicable



Never remove the panel cover or expose electrical wiring to take a photo.
